About Placekeeping.org

To keep a place is to know it, to experience it, to steward it.

Placekeeping is a public map for the care of land.

It lets people find nearby places that need tending, adopt them, and keep a record of the work over time. A place can be a park, a preserve, a roadside, or a patch of woods behind a house. The map shows what is being stewarded, by whom, and how it changes.

Formal inventories record who owns land and whether it is protected. They do not record who tends it or what condition it is in. Placekeeping keeps that record at the local level, in public.

The project is piloting in Westchester County, New York, and is open to communities across the state, with the aim of growing nationally.
